If you are thinking of buying a new car, you will definitely want to know everything regarding the warranty you will be receiving for the same. As you know a car can’t be cheap. Perhaps you will know that all cars do come with a warranty period, though you must read on to know more about it.

One amazing thing you must know is that your new car can get up to ten or more warranties. This ranges from the whole car warranty to the warranty for separate parts.

Below is the list of the most general things for which warranty is given for a car. The five vital warranties are explained in detail.

The bumper to bumper warranty: though the name sounds as if warranty is given for the entire car. But it is not as this warranty covers only the parts manufactured by the car company like that of electrical parts, air conditioners, sensors etc, other parts like tires , batteries do not come under this. There is no maintenance included and it covers a period of 3 years or 36,000 miles.

2. The powertrain warranty: this type of warranty is getting popular among car manufacturers. This warranty starts as soon as the bumper to bumper warranty expires. And this includes duration of ten years though it only covers few vital parts such as transmission, the engine and drive axles. Some of the warranty of this kind also includes accessories like the air bags and seat belts. Do check for your powertrain warranty whether it comes free or not.

Extended warranty: this kind of warranty provides an extended period of the basic warranty offered at the time of purchase. Owners who seek an extended period of coverage for their vehicles can opt for this with some extra cost for it which is deductible. This does not offer warranty for the same components as the basic warranty. This is usually provided by the manufacturing company and can be changed to other owners adding to the resale value of the vehicle.

4. Emission warranty: this warranty is all about emission control and comes in as two packages. The first one is called “performance” warranty. In this the manufacturer takes the responsibility and sees to that the vehicle does not fails the test by making repairs and adjustments when possible for the period of first two years after purchase. The second one is called “design and defects” warranty and covers the catalytic converters and its duration is for 8 years or 80,000 miles.

5. Rust and corrosion warranty: this warranty basically covers for a period of six years and can be claimed only under the conditions of complete damage and can’t be covered for partial corrosions and also for damage due to natural causes.

The other warranties are for the seat belts and air bags, manufacturers’ accessories, third party components, hybrid parts, tires, batteries, roadside breakdown coverage.
