Auto GPS Features And You
If you’re thinking of buying a GPS it can be tough to figure out the various features that are available. There are tons of features, and they won’t all be useful to everyone. If you research the features before you make your purchase you are more likely to get the auto GPS that is right for you.
For many people, the screen size is a crucial issue, for a number of reasons. If your vision is impaired a larger screen can make it easier for you to see what you need to see. The more screen you have, the more data you can convey to the driver. A larger screen also means you are less likely to make a mistake while navigating the menus.
One feature that many people are choosing today is spoken street names. This differs from the basic directions such as “left turn in 100 feet” or “turn right now.” With spoken street names the GPS unit translates the text of the street name into actual, spoken words. This helps drivers identify the streets they are looking for more easily.
Your auto GPS will come with a set of default maps which will be pertinent to your region. However, many GPS units have an optional map update feature. The world is changing everyday, and roads come and go. New highways and bypasses are being built all the time, so being able to download an updated map will keep you up to date. If you are not able to update your maps you may end up driving in circles trying to find a road that isn’t there.
Routing options are a point of contention among many auto GPS owners. The two most popular methods for routing are to use the shortest distance or the fastest route. Depending on the wants or needs of the driver, either option is useful. While fastest route can speed your trip up, the shortest route may shave several miles off your trip, saving you wear on your vehicle and gas money.
Live traffic updates are a great feature for drivers who live in highly populated areas. The GPS unit can take the information from the traffic update and route you around traffic jams or accidents. In order to receive live traffic updates most auto GPS units must be outfitted with a traffic receiver. The buyer typically pays a monthly payment to receive their updates, too. However this could be money well spent if it saves you time.
One of the more innovative features among auto GPS units these days is the point of interest feature. This feature designates landmarks, hotels, restaurants, and more. Are you worried about traffic tickets? Some point of interest features include a database of traffic cameras or known speed traps. If you search hard enough, chances are you can find a POI(point of interest) database that suits your needs.
Auto GPS features are great, if you know what you want. Depending on the driver some features are more valuable than others. It’s up to you to determine which options matter to you. Once you know the facts you can make your choice quickly and easily, and then it’s happy driving for you no matter where you go.
