Getting The Most Power From Your Honda Civic Exhaust
Before you even consider upgrading your Honda Civic exhaust system you need to work out exactly why you are upgrading it. Are you looking to increase you car’s power, make it sound better, look better, simply replace a broken part or a combination of the above. Once you have figured this out you will have the best understanding as to what part is best for your car.
Fortunately the exhaust systems on all Honda Civics are grossly undersized due to regulations governing noise and emissions. This of course means that there is plenty of potential to increase the horsepower of your car by upgrading the system.
The first things your need to upgrade is the header. This is the section of piping where the exhausts gasses from each cylinder and combined into a single pipe. There are two main types of exhaust headers for 4 cylinder Honda’s and they are 4-2-1 and 4-1. In a 4-2-1 system the four tubes combine into 2 tubes which then combine into 1 whereas in a 4-1 system the 4 tubes combine into 1 tube at a single point. The differences in design mean that power will be delivered in a different way. 4-2-1 systems are best for mid range power whereas 4-1 systems will make the most top end power.
The next thing to be upgraded is the catalytic converter. Many people simply remove these but check your local laws before doing this as it may be illegal. Otherwise any aftermarket high flow cat will do the trick.
The rest of the exhaust is called the B-pipe and this is the most commonly upgraded part. It consists of piping and the muffler, both of which have an effect on the sound of the exhaust system. Higher power engines require larger diameter exhausts piping to quickly extract the gasses away from the engine.
By upgrading all the component of the Honda Civic exhausts system you should be able to see some impressive gains when it comes to horsepower as well as sound. Now go and show off that system!
