More People Drive Without Insurance
More and more people are choosing to drive their cars without insurance. 20% of all drivers asked in a recent survey said that they, at some time, had driven a car without insurance. The previous survey had shown just 15% driving without insurance. In most cases, it was done in their own car. Most of those who drove without insurance were either men or young drivers.
The offence of driving without a licence can result in a heavy fine, combined with the loss of 6 points from the licence. In addition, most offenders have to go to court. The police can also impound the vehicle. If the cost of towing and storing the vehicle is not paid within 14 days, it is crushed. Despite the risk of losing their licence and car, because of the current economic climate, people are still driving without insurance in increasing numbers.
The cost to insurance companies of drivers who drive without insurance is also soaring. If an uninsured driver hits one of their clients, who has fully comprehensive insurance, the insurance has to pay most of the cost of having their client’s car repaired. The insured driver who has been hit usually misses out too, they lose their no claims bonus and if they have an excess on the policy they have to pay that too.
If you have only third party insurance and are hit by an uninsured car, you have to pay the entire cost of having your car repaired. Even when you get the drivers detail the police may prosecute, but you will not recover the costs of repairing your car. It is very rare that an uninsured driver will actually pay for the costs of the repair.
Because of the damage driving without insurance is causing and the alarming increase in the levels of uninsured drivers on the road the Police are cracking down hard. They are now able to use the licensing authorities’ database of untaxed vehicles to lead them to uninsured drivers and confiscate their vehicles. Hopefully the risk of losing their vehicles will stop drivers from driving without insurance.
