Autos
An automobile is designed to run primarily on roads to have seating for one to eight people, to typically have four wheels and to be constructed for the transport of people rather than goods. It is a wheeled motor vehicle used for transporting passenger. The main purpose is to transport people rather than goods.
The word automobile comes from the ancient Greek word (auts, “self”) and the Latin mobilis (”movable”), meaning a vehicle that moves itself. The first working steam-powered vehicle was designed by Ferdinand Verbiest, It was a 65 cm-long scale-model toy for the Chinese Emperor, that was unable to carry a driver or a passenger.
Manufacturing of affordable automobiles was debuted by Ransom olds at his Oldsmobile factory on a large scale. Weight of a car influences fuel consumption and performance, the heavier the car is it will increase the fuel consumption and decrease the performance. The global energy use could be heavily reduced by using lighter cars and an average weight of 500 kg has been said to be well achievable which was found by a research conducted by Julian Allwood of the University of Cambridge
Today automobiles are propelled by a internal combustion engine. Fuels are casing air pollution and are also blamed for contributing to climatic change and global warming. Development of hybrid vehicle such as plug in electric vehicles and hydro vehicles are invented to replace existing technologies. Alternative fuels such as ethanol flexible fuel vehicles and natural gas vehicles are also gaining popularity. The habitat of animals and also plants are often negatively impacted by automobiles via destruction and pollution. Fuel taxes provide a strong incentive for consumers to purchase lighter, more fuel efficent and smalle cars.
Fuel taxes are high which may provide a strong incentive for consumer to purchase smaller, fuel efficient, lighter cars. Automotive industry are experiencing a combination of pricing pressures from raw materials cost and change in consumer buying habits due to rapid oil price increase. Alternatives are established for some aspects of automobile use include public transit such as train, buses, cycling, subways, walking, trolley ways. There is increased external competition from public transport sector as consumers re evaluate their private vehicle usage.
